Arimidex (Anastrozole) is a potent, non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (AI) originally developed to treat breast cancer. In bodybuilding, it is used as an ancillary drug during anabolic steroid cycles to prevent and manage estrogen-related side effects by blocking the aromatase enzyme, which converts excess testosterone into estrogen.

How Arimidex Works in Bodybuilding
When bodybuilders use aromatizable steroids (like Testosterone, Dianabol, or Equipoise), the body converts a portion of those hormones into estrogen. Arimidex binds to the aromatase enzyme, inhibiting it from creating estrogen. A single 0.5 mg to 1 mg dose can suppress serum estrogen levels by roughly 70% to 80%.
Why Bodybuilders Use It
  • Prevention of Gynecomastia: It stops the development of male breast tissue (gynecomastia) caused by elevated estradiol levels binding to breast receptors.
  • Elimination of Water Retention: High estrogen causes the body to hold excess fluid and sodium. Controlling estrogen minimizes subcutaneous water retention, keeping muscles looking hard and defined.
  • Blood Pressure Management: Severe water retention dramatically increases blood pressure. By dropping fluid weight, Arimidex helps stabilize cardiovascular strain during a cycle.
Typical Dosing Protocols
Arimidex is highly potent, and over-suppressing estrogen can be just as detrimental to muscle growth and health as having high estrogen.
  • Standard On-Cycle Dose: 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg every other day (EOD) or every third day.
  • Targeted Use: Experienced users typically do not take it from day one; instead, they introduce it only when blood work or early symptoms (like itchy/sensitive nipples or sudden water retention) indicate a need.
  • The Danger of Crushing Estrogen: Taking 1 mg or more daily is generally considered excessive for a standard cycle. Completely wiping out estrogen eliminates its neuroprotective and cardioprotective benefits, causes severe joint pain, kills libido, and halts muscle hypertrophy.
